Box your way to good health
Looking for a workout that's also a knockout? Check out a boxing class at your local health club or gym, or learn some techniques to box your way to fitness. Boxing is a full-body workout, helping to shape muscles, burn fat, and build endurance while toning up your stomach, legs, shoulders, and hips. And unlike other workouts, you'll also perfect your punch. Here's how:
- Get the right training. A typical boxing workout might include several short rounds involving different punches and footwork. Sign up for a personal training session at the gym, or take a boxing or "boxing aerobic" class to make sure you've got it down right. As always, be sure to check with your doctor first before beginning a new workout regimen.
- Always warm up first. Stretch, jump rope, or do a light jog to get your blood flowing.
- Learn the proper form. Get your stance right to get the most out of your workout and prevent injury.
- Get the right equipment. Since boxing workouts don't actually involve dodging an opponent's punches, you won't need a mouthpiece or headgear. You might need gloves, a heavy bag—you can also "shadowbox" with yourself and forgo the bag—and a lighter "speed bag" for hand speed work.
