African American men are talking about using condoms regularly
The statistics are alarming: In 2002, HIV/AIDS was among the top 3 causes of death for African American men aged 25-54 years. In 2004, the rate of AIDS diagnosis for African American adults and adolescents was 10 times the rate for whites and 3 times the rate for Hispanics. Armed with this knowledge, African American men are deciding to use condoms regularly, regardless of their sexual preference or HIV status. Here's why:
- Changing attitudes. Once viewed as only affecting gay and white men, HIV is now a health crisis in some African American communities. Condom use is no longer a taboo.
- Being sure. Men with female partners might also have same gender partners, or a monogamous relationship may not be what it seems. Condom use can prevent not only pregnancy, but also HIV and other STDs.
- Don't take chances with first impressions. While a potential partner may "seem clean", HIV doesn't discriminate.
